Why 5C, and Why Now?

There has been rave about Apple releasing a cheaper range to the much anticipated 5S, calling it the 5C. It will spot plastic housing and most probably lower resolution display. Some are even saying it will be essentially a reconditioned 4S. But why is Apple only coming out with a cheaper model just after 6 years since the original iPhone? You say it's because Steve Job's would never allow this if he was still around today? Well the true reason may be due to more planning than we all thought.

If you think the 5C will be cheap enough to compete with second grade Android devices, you're wrong. They will be cheap enough to compete with flagship Android devices, more like. Then what is this 5C if it isn't going to be a competitor in a new market for Apple?

Apple has always been very strict with consistency and efficiency. One of the main reasons why app developers choose iOS over Android is because it is too easy to provide a consistent experience across all iOS users. The iPhone 5 is probably one of the biggest step taken by Apple ever since they launched the original iPhone, by elongating the screen and finally breaking the else flawless streak of screen size standardization.

Then there was the introduction of Lightning connector, which many thought was because they needed to make transfer more efficient and the connector more durable, but actually was because they needed to find a way to reduce the size of the 5. One of the biggest downside of the new connector is that because it removes all analog capabilities it also removes the ability to output video and audio. This means all the expensive hi-fis with docks will no longer work.

Then there was the fact that iOS 7 will not support many older model iPhones, and that the 4S does not come with LTE.

Everything about the 5C points towards Apple's relentless strive to move as many iPhone users away from older generation models as fast as possible. Sure they will not be able to get everyone pre-4 to buy into the 5C, but by launching this new range it will definitely be able to move more users faster than their previous 1-model-a-year strategy.
