The True Speed of Download

Too many times have I heard people ranting on and on about our local ISPs advertising their download speed being so much more than they actually are. I am not saying they are wrong, rather they have been misinformed. Call it misinterpretation if you may, but this is no place to be citing cases. I made the same mistake a few times before a friend corrected me, and I think it is important we know what we are buying into (especially you Unifi users, paying so goddamn much for Internet).

Local ISPs like Unifi (Telekom Malaysia) advertise download speeds of 5,10 and 20 MBPS respectively according to different price packages. The Mbps they are advertising is actually Mega Bits Per Second. When we download files off of the web the counter will usually measure your download amount in Mega Bytes.

This is important because there are 8 bits in every byte. So when you're downloading a movie using Unifi that says it can do 20 Mbps, it's actually doing 2 Mega Bytes Per Second. Google proves it down here

It is too easy to make the mistake by putting one and one together, but the fact is we haven't been duped. We are getting what we subscribed for.
