The Weekly: 04 May 2013
New Xbox, Yahoo buys Tumblr, Yahoo changes Flickr, Cara is the new facial detection App, Video Call from Mt Everest, Attach money to your Gmail, HTC losing it, Yahoo on spending spree
One Xbox to Rule Your Living Hall
There you go, the second punchline ever after 'Now Everyone Can < insert action here >'. But it makes sense because this Xbox will become the console for your living room. You will have gaming, TV, the Internet, Blu-Ray and everything else you need in a living hall.
Meyers promised they will maintain Tumblr the way it was before, and that Karp will stay as CEO for the next 4 years to make sure of it. But then again she did say there will be advertisements in Tumblr. Hmmm. I'm not a big fan of advertisements, though I understand people need to make money.
Yahoo Improves Flickr. Finally
Free account gives you 1TB of free storage, no longer the the old 200 photos cap. They even changed the layout, and they have pretty usable iOS and Android apps. On another note, I think we've already have Instagram and Tumblr for photo sharing. And Flickr, to me, will only appeal to existing Flickr photographers who have not left yet. What they can do though is have a strong revamp. And between Flickr and Tumblr, I think Yahoo will maintain Flickr for a 'Photographer-Focused' site, and Tumblr for them hipsters.
Cara The Facial Detection Software
Attach a camera at the entrance of your store and it will collect information by detecting your face and put you into demographic groups. This makes it easier for retailers to track visits and build market research statistics. It's facial detection not recognition. So don't worry about it companies being able to track you personally. At least not yet.
Video Call from Mt Everest
Firstly because I'm also a aspiring mountaineer and secondly being able to make video calls from the top of the world is really awesome. I can't even make a call from the top of Mt Kinabalu! So this is it:

Speaking of Everest, it is also worth noting that the 6 members of the Malaysian FELDA team managed to summit via the southeastern ridge. Congrats!!! Yes I am jealous.
Email Me Some Money
Google will soon let us send Google Wallet money through Gmail as an attachment. Sounds pretty weird. Still trying to accept it. Done.
HTC Quietly Falling Apart
Too many top level executives responsible for HTC's awesomeness have been leaving lately. Maybe it's from low morale because their First turned out pretty floppy and their One are not hitting the market as remarkably as the S4. Could this be the start of the end of a potentially strong Samsung competitor?
Chromebook Comes to Malaysia
Yes Network just brought Samsung Chromebooks in, and they're sold with RM88 Plan for 24 months. At RM 1299, you will be paying RM 311 of your monthly Plan upfront. I'll only get this if ChrUbuntu is absolutely stable and good on it, because Chrome OS is frankly pretty useless
Yahoo Eyeing Hulu
Yahoo pockets Tumblr, and still has US$ 4bn to spend. She eyes Hulu, a TV and movie provider company. No they're not in Malaysia, but with Yahoo's help they may reach sooner than never.
Hulu is jointly owned by Disney, Comcast and News Corp. As of now, interested parties include companies we've never heard of and more companies we've never heard of. Then there's Time Warner.
