The Weekly: 02 May 2013
Highlights
Waze might be sold, Office competes with Docs, 3D Printing improves lives, Sony profits, Pay-to-play in YouTube, 3D Printing harms lives, Microsoft insults Google, Spotify in Malaysia
Waze Goes to FacebookJust rumors, but it may just happen. Waze is an awesome crowd-sourced GPS app on mobile devices that can receive traffic information and learn routes from users. As much as I'd prefer Waze to remain independent, I think it's still a better option than Apple buying it and taking it's availability from other platforms other than iOS.
Co-Authoring with Microsoft Office Web Apps
Soon you can co-author documents using Office Web Apps, kind of like what that has already been available on Google Docs. Only difference is they're more format-specific with.. well.. Microsoft Office formats. Cool.
Robohand Builds Hands
The Robohand Project is building hands for people without hands or digits, using 3D printing. Technology is simply about the ability to change people's lives. Bravo Richard, Ivan and Makerbot!
Sony Finally Profits After Five Years
But it wasn't from any of their digital consumer devices, it was from asset sales. Console gaming, PCs and digital cameras are on constant decline, and they're not doing any better than their competitors in stronger industries either.
YouTube Goes Pay-to-Play
With all the advertisements pouring into our videos over the past two years or so, what would you expect them to do next? I'm guessing they might jack up their advertisement rate on free videos just to get us so annoyed we'll shirt over.
Stick To Your Guns
Don't have one? Print it! That's the thing with new technology; there are some out there always eager to use them for the destruction of the world. With a Makerbot, you can now download schematics, print and assemble your very own gun.
Microsoft Insults Google Docs
After Google Docs tearing Office up for so many years, finally we're seeing a retaliation. But I honestly don't see the similarities between Docs and 365 here, mainly because 365 is a paid service. But check out the video below. Entertaining no less.
Spotify in Malaysia!
Well I don't know when did this start happening, but they're finally here! Yay!!! For RM 14.90/month you can listen to radio, stream playlists, and download and play anything offline on all your devices. The best thing about it? It's bloody LEGIT!
And if I can find songs by The Submarines, Avalanche City, Headhunterz and Ben Howard in their list of available music, your mainstream stuff won't be a problem.
